A DC combiner box (also known as a PV combiner box) is a core device in photovoltaic power generation systems used to collect DC power from multiple PV strings, provide protection and monitoring. It is mainly installed between the PV array and the inverter.
I. Core Functions
Power Collection
- Combines the DC power from multiple PV strings (commonly 8/12/16 strings) in parallel, greatly reducing the number of cables connected to the inverter and simplifying wiring.
- Increases the total output current to match the input specifications of the inverter.
Multi-level Safety Protection
- Overcurrent protection: Each string is equipped with a dedicated DC fuse/circuit breaker to quickly cut off power in case of a fault, preventing fire and component damage.
- Anti-reverse current protection: Built-in anti-reverse diodes to prevent current backflow between strings (e.g., under shadow shading).
- Lightning protection: Built-in Surge Protective Device (SPD) to suppress lightning-induced overvoltage and protect downstream equipment.
Intelligent Monitoring (Smart Type)
- Real-time monitoring of voltage, current for each string, internal temperature, and surge protector status.
- Data upload via interfaces such as RS485 (Modbus) for remote monitoring and fault location.
II. Main Structure and Components
- Enclosure: Made of metal (steel plate/stainless steel) or engineering plastic, with outdoor protection class IP65, waterproof and dustproof.
- DC fuses: Standard for each input circuit, providing fast overcurrent protection.
- Anti-reverse diodes: Prevent reverse current backflow.
- DC circuit breaker: Main output switch for system maintenance and isolation.
- Surge Protective Device (SPD): Core component for lightning protection.
- Monitoring module (optional): Sensors and communication unit to enable intelligent monitoring.
III. Key Technical Parameters
- Rated voltage: DC 1000V or 1500V (mainstream systems)
- Number of input circuits: 4/6/8/12/16/24 strings
- Single-circuit input current: 10A/15A/20A/32A
- Protection class: IP65 for outdoor use, IP54 for indoor use
IV. Working Process
- Positive and negative cables from multiple PV strings are connected to the combiner box.
- Current of each string passes through the fuse → sensor (smart type) → anti-reverse diode.
- All branches are combined in parallel on the busbar.
- The combined current, protected by the main circuit breaker and surge protector, is output to the inverter.
